WHAT WE’RE SEEING NOW
Disinfo News
- On Tuesday, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled the state can enforce an 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions — the latest in a string of extreme state policies restricting women’s reproductive rights since Roe was overturned. Far-right media outlets like Fox News — knowing how unpopular the decision will be — have been burying the news in their coverage
- Right-wing bad actors are trying to drum up opposition to a new government proposal to cancel at least some student debt for more than 30 million Americans. They frame student loan borrowers as wealthy “rich kids” who are taking money from the working class — when in reality, this relief helps low- and middle-income earners
- This week’s eclipse brought out a few wild conspiracy theorists, as well as a lot of climate denialists claiming this is evidence against solar panels (in reality, it should be an important reminder that solar energy is a critical renewable energy source!)
Platform News
- A coalition of more than 200 nonprofits, online research organizations and civil society groups have sent an open letter to 12 major tech and social media companies. Urging them to ramp up their content moderation ahead of the upcoming elections in the US as well as across the globe, reports CyberScoop
- This week, The Hill reported that Taiwanese groups outlined a major disinformation campaign employed by Chinese actors during Taiwan’s elections earlier this year, including deploying generative AI to manipulate videos and sow discord. According to Microsoft, China is using similar tactics in the US
- Mashable covered a recent study from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) that finds that anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim accounts have grown on X, formerly Twitter — gaining millions of new followers since the October 7 attack
