WHAT WE’RE SEEING NOW
Disinfo News
- The Heritage Foundation, a far-right think tank, shared a fake Spanish-language flier on its social media accounts that appeared to instruct migrants to vote illegally for Biden in the U.S. The flyers also mention a Jewish humanitarian organization and promote antisemitic conspiracies in addition to election disinformation
- Right-wing accounts are attacking new data showing violent crime is falling rapidly to pre-pandemic levels, across major cities. Bad actors, who stoke fear of crime for political gain, claim the government is “hiding” the real data
- A new Media Matters report shows that disinformation about birth control is widespread on TikTok
Platform News
- Let’s start with good news! On April 6, Maryland became the first state in the US to pass a “Kids Code” bill, which aims to prevent tech companies from collecting predatory data from children and using design features that could cause them harm. Child online safety advocates are taking the battle to the states
- In the hours after Iran announced its drone and missile attack on Israel April 13, AI-generated and other misleading posts went viral on X. Just 34 of these fake posts received more than 37 million views, according to non-profit think-tank The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD)
- Looks like new X users will have to pay a small fee to post soon. Elon Musk says it’s to stop the “onslaught of bots.”
RECOMMENDATIONS

- Indivisible instructions to opt-in to receive political messaging on Meta here
- Build your reputation as a trusted messenger within your network. Post in more places (where you’re comfortable), and include tips as well as sandwiches
- Consider a focus on Facebook online. It’s still where most people find information
- Continue to hold intentional and impromptu offline conversations
