A Word About The Governor’s Race

In the upcoming June 2 California Primary, we recommend: Vote for either Xavier Becerra or Tom Steyer for California Governor.

Our number one goal in this election is to make sure a Democrat appears on the ballot for Governor in November. The way our primary system works, the top two primary vote-getters move on to run against each other in the November election. With more than 60 candidates running for Governor, there’s a danger that the top two vote-getters in the primary will both be Republicans! To avoid this danger, we recommend that you vote for a Democrat with a solid chance to finish in the top two. Based on the polling we’ve seen, there are only two candidates who fit this bill: Steyer and Becerra.

Of these two candidates, we confess to a preference for Steyer. He’s the more progressive, with strong support from environmental groups like our allies at Sierra Club and the endorsement of The Santa Barbara Independent and our friend Assemblymember Gregg Hart. But many of our members like Becerra, who’s won the endorsement of our allies at Planned Parenthood and the support of our friend Representative Salud Carbajal. Given the importance of placing a Democrat on the November ballot for Governor, we recommend that you vote for one of these two candidates, and not for a different Democrat that likely has no chance to win.
