The UCSB Multicultural Center Is Proud To Present The 5th Annual Social Justice Conference 2018.
This year the SJCON Committee has decided to focus on giving students the capability to fight back against the systems in place that hinder us from succeeding. This year’s conference will focus on channeling our anger and need for change into the collective endeavor for social progress. This conference will provide resources to individuals to help them become involved in local organizations as well as dismantle the oppressive systems that surround us by supporting progressive institutions within our local community.
We are mad as hell and it is time to use our minds, our bodies, and our power to make change where we exist. This conference will be smaller in order to foster an intimate setting for folks to engage in dialogue about what is needed to motivate one another in a time like this, as well as create new and stronger relationships amongst ourselves and within the larger UCSB community. Only 60-80 applicants will be accepted. Students – who are new to the concepts of community building and activism OR just want to learn more and be proactive on campus – are encouraged to apply. A wait-list will be created if necessary.
Content of the workshops will focus on:
Workshop Block 1: Self Advocacy 2.0
What exactly does self-care look like and how can we us it as a radical form of activism? In turn this can allow us to tackle and heal the wounds social justice issues present.
Workshop Block 2: Campus-Based Activism
This workshop block will connect community members to local causes, issues, and other activists to exchange strategies and experiences for learning and outreach purposes.
Workshop Block 3: Bigger Than Us All
The final workshop will bring self advocacy and local activism into the perspective of the inner-workings of institutional/ broader oppression we are fighting against while making changes within our local community.
Want to be more than an attendee?
