ISB FOCUS: Political Engagement and Get Out the Vote

Background: Approximately 42% of eligible voters failed to vote in 2016. Though reasons vary, ranging from restrictive voter id laws, to increased polling place closures, to voter apathy, in order to be successful this November we need to galvanize these nonvoters and motivate them to go to the polls. GOTV efforts will ramp up during the final weeks before the Nov. 6 midterms, but there are many important things we can do before then to engage voter interest, increase turnout and support civic participation.

What We Can Do

  1. Join Indivisible Santa Barbara and UCSB on Move-In Weekend (September 22nd & 23rd) and Week of Welcome (September 22nd – 30th) to register incoming freshmen to vote.
    To volunteer, sign up here.
  2.  Make a plan to vote.  Election Day is Tuesday, November 6!
Last day to register: Monday, October 22
    Online registration: https://registertovote.ca.go
  3. Indivisible Santa Barbara has created an Activist Buddy Network to bring people together with shared interests on specific issues and candidates. Participating in GOTV activities with a friend or “activist buddy” can reinforce your commitment and be fun as well. Studies show that personal interaction with voters is one of the most powerful tools to encourage people to vote. Volunteer for a campaign to canvas your neighborhood and talk to voters. Contact Democratic Party Headquarters in Santa Barbara for opportunities to engage with voters about candidates and ballot issues. You can help to register voters whether by participating in an organized registration drive or just by making sure your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors are registered before the October 22 deadline. Offer to help voters find out where their polling place is. As simple as it may sound, remind people when the election is—Tuesday, November 6—and encourage them to make a plan to vote. ISB Elects New Steering Committee

Indivisible Santa Barbara welcomes our recently elected Steering Committee members for the coming year. Esolena is our new Chairperson and Savannah is Secretary. Judy will remain as interim Treasurer during the transition. The other new Steering Committee members include Eileen, Jeff, Barbara, Michal, Melinda and Keith, a continuing member. We appreciate all members who participated in the election process, especially those who agreed to run.

Guiding Principles

In California, we are in a unique position to embolden not only our Members of Congress, but also our California state legislators, who have declared California’s intent to lead the charge against harmful federal policies. Our leaders need to hear our voices: our calls, letters, emails, personal stories, and in-person meetings count. These actions directly strengthen our Elected Representatives in Congress.  This group is dedicated to providing  the most effective daily and weekly actions possible, and we encourage our members to make them part of their daily routine.

We are growing daily and need YOU to become an organizer, spearhead a committee, make calls, write letters, blog, attend meetings, and more.

  1. We are an inclusive community.
  2. We are Indivisible. We do not propose policy, but are united in our pursuit to oppose harmful legislation.
    • We have a zero-tolerance policy toward in-fighting. As long as Liberals, Progressives, Democrats, and Moderates engage in a circular firing squad, we give our power to the minority–Extreme Conservatives win.
  3. We believe that citizens must act where we live, interacting with our own Members of Congress. We strive to take regular action, daily, weekly, monthly.
  4. We are patriotic Americans.
  5. We believe in peaceful actions, we do not condone violence.
